Volunteer With Us
More than 500,000 immigrants come to this country each year. Many do not speak English and have difficulty understanding our culture. In our community, the number of people who want and need to learn to speak English is increasing rapidly. Non-English speakers come to Orlando as migrant workers, international students and their families, international businesspeople, and many other reasons. The people who need and want to learn to speak English are our neighbors. With that, we hope that you will consider joining our ESL team. God has commanded us to love our neighbors. He even specifically commanded us to love the foreigners who live in our land:
"The Lord your God is supreme over all gods and over all powers. He is great and mighty, and he is to be obeyed. He does not show partiality...he loves the foreigners who live with our people, and gives them food and clothes. So then show love for those foreigners, because you were once foreigners in Egypt." (Deut. 10:17-19, GNB)
One of the best ways to demonstrate and share God's love with our non-English speaking neighbors is through our ESL classes. There are several ways through which you can volunteer:
- Teacher - to teach English to adult internationals and immigrants so they can function more fully in the United States. Also to intentionally demonstrate and share the love of Jesus Christ with ESL students. (Click here for more info)
- Assistant - to assist the teacher and students in the classroom.
- Interviewer - to interview new students one-on-one assessing their English language fluency level.
- Refreshments - to help set up refreshments for the students and volunteers halfway through the evening, giving our students a short break from their studies, and allowing them to all come together for a time of singing, a short devotion, and any needed announcements.
- Transportation - to provide transportation for needed students to and from class. Buses and vans available for use, but please note that a chauffeur's license is required.
- Childcare - Although childcare is currently not available, we know that many students are unable to attend classes due to the lack of this service. We hope to begin offering childcare as soon as possible. Please let us know if you are interested in helping us!
